Unique characteristics of translation for news media will be outlined: (1) greater freedom in managing the original textual content; (2) choice for straightforward language & structures, offered the mass character with the audience; (3) the use of localisms & neologisms permitted by geographical, eventual, & cultural delimitation from the audience; (4) significant limitations of time & space, demanding ready references & good summarizing abilities; & (5) the function of the translator as retranslator & publisher of texts, in both source & target 'languages'. Other tasks of the journalistic translator contain literary translation for supplements, draft translations, oral/sight translation, precis, meaning at interviews, etc . A quantitative & qualitative investigation of Silk & American compliments. Interview Ss (N = 20 Egyptian & 20 American university students) provided a corpus of 60 Egyptian & 60 American comments. The data were analyzed pertaining to compliment type, attributes acknowledged, relationship involving the compliment giver & recipient, gender(s) with the compliment provider & recipient, & supplement frequency.
